My Military Service
My military service was brief and quite uneventful. But having done it I learned a great deal about duty, rank, accountability and of course discipline. I have a strong respect for our service men and women. I have a profound respect for those who have put it all on the line during any war or conflict in our nation's history. I salute you.
At the age of 17 I developed a severe wander lust. I couldn't wait to leave home (central Minnesota) and I didn't have the discipline to attend college at that time. So I joined the U.S. Army. I scored very high on the entrance exam so they pigeon holed me into what they considered to be a prestigous job. (There are no prestigous jobs in the Army at the rank of zero). I was to be placed in the Army Air Defense Operations and Intelligence division. I stumbled through both basic and advanced training at Fort Bliss in El Paso Texas and then was promptly shipped off to the deep swamps of Louisiana in a tiny little post named Fort Polk. I was assigned to the 155th ADA Battalion Headquarters Battery ("First to Fire"). At Fort Polk I was the personal assistant to the division Executive Officer and I held a Top Secret security clearance. I spent the next 2 years 8 months at Fort Polk. I hated nearly every minute of it so when my enlistment was over I relocated to Pittsburg CA and I have been in the Bay Area since 1988.
I was enlisted in the U.S. Army from August of 1985 through May of 1988. I received the Army Medal of Accomodation as well as the Meritorious Service Medal. I achieved the rank of E-4 which was the highest rank that could be achieved in the short time I was enlisted. I received an honorable discharge in May of 1988. I then used my GI bill to attend college for 2 years at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill. I used my VA benefits to buy my first home in 1990. |
